The Best German Wines

White Wines are Germany’s Specialty.

While France and California are by far the best known wine-growing regions in the world, Germany has been growing wine for over a millennia. Seriously. There are wineries in Germany that date back to Roman times.

The steep slopes in the West of Germany (along the Rhine) make for ideal growing conditions for white wines. Over half of all German wines are white, and the country has a reputation for sweet Rieslings. Some wine lovers criticize Germany for only producing these sweet wines (as opposed to France’s diverse range of reds and whites). Others appreciate Germany for what Germany does best: sweet, fruity wines that pair perfectly with a summer evening.

1. Dr. Loosen Winery

If you ever meet Dr. Loosen (it’s an actual person), you will never forget him. A to-the-point man with unkempt grey hair scattered in all directions, he will tell you exactly what he thinks. His wine is grown in a decidedly old-school kind of way. If you visit their wineries, you’ll feel like you’ve gone back in time.

As for the wine itself? These Rieslings are sweet, smooth and fruity. In fact they are deceptively smooth. With most sweet wines, you will need to pace yourself because of the richness. But Dr. Loosen’s smoothness means that you can drink a couple of glasses without thinking twice. The tartness is present but not strong. It’s the perfect blend of what white wine does best.

2. Clean Slate Riesling

For those that desire a little more bit (i.e. dryness) to their white wine, Clean Slate is an excellent choice. Clean Slate is sweet and fruity like Dr. Loosen, but its dryness cleanses the palate. This would be a great wine to pair with a fish entree.
